Quintessence: the evolution
of automotive interiors

BS Thesis Exhibition Design Experiential Design

The exhibition explores the evolution of automotive interior design through the symbolic and conceptual lens of alchemy, investigating the parallels between the alchemical Magnum Opus and the transformation of vehicles into immersive, experiential environments.

Rooted in multidisciplinary research, ranging from nautical and automotive design to metaphysical frameworks, the project develops a narrative exhibition onboard a MSC cruiseship, structured around the four alchemical phases, which represent a progressive journey of refinement and awareness, both materially and conceptually.

Alchemy as Design Language

Alchemy merges science, mysticism, and transformation.
The project draws from this ancient discipline, interpreting the path toward the Philosopher’s Stone as a metaphor for both interior refinement and user-centered evolution in mobility design.

MSC Meraviglia

Earlier research led to a conceptual cruise project based on the existing MSC Meraviglia, where alchemical themes structured onboard experiences. This context inspired the transposition of those symbolic transitions to the automotive field.

Concept Development

Grounded in the parallel between the automotive, nautical and metaphisical worlds, the project envisions an onboard exhibition that retraces the metamorphosis of the vehicle interior through the four alchemical phases: Nigredo, Albedo, Citrinitas, and Rubedo.

This conceptual framework not only guides the spatial narrative but also reflects a broader trajectory of change, from raw materiality to experiential wholeness. Research confirmed a growing interest in immersive exhibitions that unite storytelling, design, and innovation. With this insight, the concept was refined to ensure it delivers a meaningful, memorable experience where the evolution of the physical space mirrors the inner journey of transformation.

Quintessence Exhibition

Nigredo

Nigredo marks the first phase of decomposition, where materials break down to their raw state. It symbolizes darkness, chaos, and the beginning of purification.

In this era, car interiors were minimal, utilitarian, and designed purely for function and ease of maintenance. Visual appeal and user comfort were secondary to reliability. Common tones were neutral: greys, blacks, and beiges.

Albedo

Albedo represents purification and the emergence of clarity after chaos.

Automotive interiors began to evolve with better materials, improved craftsmanship, and greater attention to comfort. Leather, wood, and chrome were introduced, along with richer color palettes. The dashboard transformed to accommodate radios and early onboard tech, turning the car into a more personal, lounge-like space.

Citrinitas

Citrinitas symbolizes a phase of transformation, understanding, and balance between opposites.

This period saw a major design revolution driven by technology: ergonomic seats, flexible layouts, climate control, entertainment systems, and GPS navigation. Lightweight synthetic materials became common, reflecting a focus on efficiency, safety, and sustainability. Comfort and tech merged to create a more holistic interior experience.

Rubedo

Rubedo is the final stage of transformation, representing perfection and realization of full potential.

Modern vehicles center on emotional and physical user interaction. Interiors are fully adaptive and immersive, spaces for entertainment, work, or relaxation. Fluid forms, rich personalization, and seamless technology integration reflect individual lifestyles and aspirations, turning the car into a true extension of the self.
